Almost a half century ago John Szarkowski (Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art) published his book, The Photographer's Eye. This seminal work holds together today as well as it did 48 years ago. Here is the opening of his introduction, “This book is an investigation of what photographs look like, and why they look that way.
The invention of photography provided a radically new picture-making process —a process based not on synthesis but on selection.”
lndeed. What to keep, and what to discard? That is the primary conundrum that photographers face when they pick up the camera and put their eye to the viewfinder. What to keep and what to discard. That is life in the Viewfinder. It is a place I cherish. The VIEW exists — it is up to me to FIND what to capture.
Luke Wynne’s photographic career began in NYC. His work appeared in Andy Warhol’s Interview, New York Magazine, and Cosmopolitan. He moved to Los Angeles in 1980 where he was an editorial, portrait and movie photographer. He worked on more than 30 films for Disney, Fox, Universal and Paramount Studios. His editorial work continued with the magazines: Shape, New West, Voice (France), Oggi (Italy) and TelePoche (France).
Wynne lived in Italy from 1999 to 2011, where he conducted portrait workshops and advanced photography courses.
He returned to the USA and moved to Easton, PA. He received part of an NEA grant for everyday in 2011. Wynne has been an Adjunct Professor of Photography at Moravian University since 2014. In 2015, he produced a book - Artists in Residence - with a show at the Banana Factory.
In 2017, he was an exhibitor and curator of the Allentown Art Museum exhibition Allentown X 7: Photographic Explorations. In 2023, he curated the exhibition Magical Seeing at Moravian University’s Payne Gallery.
